LAHORE:

Traffic remained suspended on Lower Mall for more than an hour after six traffic wardens and eight students from the Govt Islamia College on Friday.

Police said that two students wanted the wardens to help stop the traffic. When the wardens refused, the police said, the students beat the wardens.

This led to a scuffle among the four.

They said that more wardens from a nearby picket rushed to resolve the matter. Police said that Abbas and Sajjad called for help and six other IJT members joined the fight.

A few minutes later, some senior police officials reached the scene and pacified both sides.

Hundreds of students of the Govt Islamia College then protested against the police at the chowk.

The traffic was resumed after senior police officials assured the protesting students of appropriate action against the officials found responsible.

Ahmad Shaheen, an IJT spokesman, told The Express Tribune that the two students had neither misbehaved, nor demanded that the wardens stop the traffic.

He said they had been stopped for using mobile phone while driving.

“They apologised and requested that they be let go as they were students, but they did not listen.”

He said the policemen at a nearby picket had intervened for no reason and abused the students.

This led to a fight.

He said one of the students then called some fellow students for help.

He said the students were not treated fairly. He said they were left with no choice but to protest against the unprofessional and rude behaviour of the police.

Ahmad | 12 years ago | Reply Punjab police is famous for its brutality especially against students. What happened when students and teachers were protesting in front of Punjab assembly??? Who was responsible for all that? And Mr. Faisal as you are blaming IJT, if you have some proofs of its "terrorism" than why you are not going in courts???
khirad | 12 years ago | Reply Clearly shows Police was responsible for all of this as they provoked students and students were left with no choice but to protest If anybody thinks that these matters of students should be solved with civil manner he should protest against government banning of Student Union thus taking the democratic right so to solve every issue students have to Protest on streets because they are left With no choice
