The unflattering perspective Part II: Obama taking things backward in the Muslim World, says Chomsky

Published: April 20, 2011

Chomsky rubbishes the belief that there is an Iranian threat.

CAMBRIDGE, MA:

US President Barack Obama is taking things backward and a recent poll by the Brookings Institution showed that the positive attitude towards him has declined very radically, Professor Noam Chomsky says when asked about Obama’s success with the Muslim World.

“I mean, how can anyone take him seriously when he talks about human rights in Iran and the region when Saudi Arabia, one of the most brutal and extreme countries in the region, is his main ally,” Chomsky says.

While accepting that Iran is an interesting case and at the heart of US foreign policy, Chomsky rubbishes the belief that there is an Iranian threat. “What is the Iranian threat? There is no military threat by Iran. It has a very low expenditure on military unlike the US. It says they have a very low capacity to deploy force, their military doctrine is defensive and designed to deter an invasion of Iran,” he says.

Because of their defensive strategy, Chomsky also appears to support Iran’s nuclear ambitions and believes that if Iran is developing its nuclear capacity, it will be designed as a deterrent. “If any country needs a deterrent, it is Iran. Just take a look at the map. It is completely surrounded by US military bases,” he says. “There is a major military presence in the Arabian Sea – about a quarter of the world’s aircraft carriers are deployed there and almost all the big carriers are American. Obama has sharply expanded the US offensive capacity in the island of David Garcia which is a very important military base, following Iran.”

Media

“The corporatised media has pressures and you see that there can be prejudices,” Chomsky says, when asked if media can ever really be free.

Chomsky is a vocal critic of the mass media and has co-authored the book Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media, which was an analysis of the news media as business. Two Canadian filmmakers later also made a documentary based on the book and the film received several awards.

He believes that pressures on mainstream media are almost similar to those in academia but says these restrictions can be ignored. “It’s not that you can’t break out of it. It’s just that there are many restrictions that make it hard and there are strong pressures to conform. They can be independent and there are examples,” he says.

For Chomsky, the way forward for truly independent media is to gain reader loyalty and support instead of being dependent on commercial advertising. “In the western hemisphere, as far as I know, a Mexican newspaper gets very low advertising because the business doesn’t like it but theirs is a very high-quality product. [Thus] it is the second largest newspaper in Mexico. They survive on readership. I usually learn something new whenever I read that paper,” he says.

Both iran & suadi arabia have backward, brutal religious regimes in power. The saudi dynasty goes from father to son with no concept of democracy whereas iran has a supreme leader who weilds all power with a puppet president elected every few years as long as that president follows the line of the supreme leader.

it’s time that religion & state are separated & religion’s interference into the matters of the state is ended.Whenever we’ve had religious theocracies we’ve seen the disastrous results for those societies, especially their women.Recommend

Both iran & saudia have been fighting their proxy battle in pakistan with deadly consequences for pakistani society. They’ve been funding socalled mazhabi parties over here who then work on spreading religious hatred & intolerance in our country.

it’s time we told both these countries to leave us alone & fight their battles on thier own home grounds. We should ban all these sectarian parties who have been given mainstream recognition & regularly appear on tv talk shows to spread their intolerant sectarian beliefs.Recommend

“David Garcia” should read “Diego Garcia”. Chomsky, recently, has been displaying senility. He does not see a threat from a nuke-capable Iran. All the Shia uprisings in the the mideast have an Iranian hand. The last thing the region needs is a nuclear-armed Iran. That would then open the floodgates. Saudi, with its Sunni leanings, would want one too. In an already unstable region on the threshold of rabid radicalization, the region would be a wasteland in no time if this is allowed to happen.Recommend

Why Iran is a threat. Simple Saudi Arabia is US ally and its a Sunni Majority country where as Iran is mainly shia. Saudis do not like Iran and promises US of continuous supply of oil and help of other Islamic countries. So US is after Iran, it is as simple as that.Recommend

    @J. Oberoi:
West and central asia is a waste land already…………
I would put pakistan above arabia, uae or iran in muslim countries why???????
pakistan even with so much difficulties has medical, engineering universities. They may not have money but they have equal zeal for education (which in any sense is most important)………
Look at these foolish arabs they have hoards of money but they have failed to establish a single university of world fame……
UAE have given land for indian colleges of national and international repute to establish their campuses there, but as report say most of the students who study go from india only….
    WHY?????.
Simply because arabs dont have the same zeal for education……..
As far as their petro deposits are concerned the recent revealations by wikileaks say that all of arabs especially saudia arabia’s petroleum deposits are grossly over estimated.
With the same rate of exploitation they will be used up in year 2022 to 2025………Recommend
