KARACHI:

The City District Government Karachi (CDGK), which sets the prices of groceries, was called in to the court over a petition challenging higher milk prices.

A non-profit group, the United Human Rights Commission, has filed the case, saying that dairy farmers, wholesalers and retailers are pocketing Rs5.5 million every day on the milk produced by dairy farms.

When the petition came up for hearing, the CDGK’s lawyer was not present. Chief Justice Mushir Alam and Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi adjourned the case and issued notices to the CDGK to be represented at the next hearing.

Petroleum prices petition

Chief Justice Mushir Alam and Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi put off the hearing of a petition, filed by an NGO, against higher petroleum prices. It told the petitioner to submit a table comparing international and local prices.

The bench asked the deputy attorney-general “to assist the court with all the tax and levies imposed on such products” before the next hearing.
