MUZAFFARABAD: At least six people were killed and 26 others injured when a speeding bus fell into a ravine near Akhor Bun Hajeera of Rawalakot district on Thursday.

The bus was crammed with passengers and was en route to Forward Kahuta from Rawalpindi district. The accident took place in the Hajeera area of Rawalakot, some 155 kilometres away from the capital of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The bus driver managed to escape. Police say they have launched a manhunt.

Local residents and police started the initial search and rescue operation in the area.

Two dozen injured passengers were moved to the government hospital in Hajeera while two passengers were referred to Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed al Nahyan Hospital in Rawalakot. Doctors at the hospital said the condition of both the passengers was critical.

In its initial report, the Hajeera police has cited speeding as the possible reason behind the accident.

The deceased passengers, all residents of Forward Kahuta, identified as Zahid, Nazir, Waqar, Zohra Bagum, Gulnaz Bagum and Zahida. Upon completing the medico legal formalities, police handed over the six bodies to the relatives of the deceased who were laid to the rest in their ancestral graveyards in Kahuta.
