Young Ben McDermott scored his maiden T20 cricket ton as Hobart Hurricanes chased down a record total of 223 to clinch a nail-biter against Melbourne Renegades at the Docklands Stadium, in Melbourne on Thursday.

While chasing a mammoth total, Tim Paine’s men lost two early wickets but man of the match McDermott, who was playing his sixth T20 match, scored breathtaking 114 off just 52 balls, which included eight fours and nine massive sixes.

He was well supported by veteran George Bailey, who scored a timely 59 off 42 balls with the help of three fours and two sixes, as the visitors achieved their target on the last ball of the match with two wickets in hand.

For Renegades, West Indian off-spinner Sunil Narine claimed three wickets, whereas veteran chinaman Brad Hogg and all-rounder Tom Cooper picked two apiece.

Earlier, the hosts after being put in to bat, scored 222 for the loss of four wickets to set a new record in the tournament, overtaking the previous highest score of 210 which was scored by Hurricanes in 2013.

Captain Aaron Finch was the top scorer of the innings with 63 off 40 balls, which included six fours and two sixes, and he was well supported by Cooper, who finished with 53 not out off just 24 balls which included seven fours and two sixes.

For Hurricanes, right-arm pacer Jake Reed picked two wickets.
