For the past nine years, I have been in a dysfunctional relationship. My liaison started somewhat unexpectedly, quickly becoming an all-consuming passionate love affair. My partner reciprocated strongly, bestowing deep affection and adoration upon me. Blinded by love, I was naive to her failings. Yes, at times she was self-destructive, irrational and grossly irresponsible, but I hoped by appealing to her nature’s better angles she could change. Instead, as the years progressed, and, supported by her ‘friends’ in the media, she corroded, simultaneously displaying signs of megalomania and paranoia. Once the relationship turned abusive and I feared for my life, I decide to call it quits. Today, the divorce comes through. Her name is Pakistan. And today, I am leaving her for good.
This was not a difficult decision to make. In fact, I didn’t make the decision. It was made for me. You do not chart your own destiny in Pakistan; Pakistan charts it for you. It’s emigration by a thousand news stories. I am aware that bemoaning the state of Pakistan as a final shot appears churlish and arrogant. After all, I have the luxury to leave — many others do not. Nor do I want to discredit the tireless work of the thousands who remain to improve the lives of millions of Pakistanis. They are better men and women than I. Pakistan has also given me so much over the years. It was Pakistan who introduced me to the love of my life. And it was upon her manicured lawns that we married, and upon her reclaimed soil that we set up our first home. She brought the love of a new family and new friends into my life. And it was Pakistan that witnessed the birth of my son, Faiz — named after one of her greatest sons.
She embraced me like no other gora post-9/11. I appeared in a documentary/reality series titled “George Ka Pakistan”. It allowed me to explore the country. I ploughed fields in the Punjab, built Kalashnikovs in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (probably couldn’t do that now), and mended fishing boats in Balochistan. The culmination of the series saw the then prime minister, Shaukat Aziz, confer Pakistani citizenship upon me, after the viewing public voted overwhelmingly to make me one of them. I was their George. Fame and affection followed.
But that love was conditional. Conditional upon me playing the role cast — the naïve gora. The moment I abandoned the Uncle Tom persona and questioned the defined establishment narratives — whether through my television work or columns — excommunication began. No longer a Pakistani in the eyes of others, my citizenship evidently was not equitable to others.
So, as I depart, I could go with my reputation tarnished, but still largely intact. Or I could leave you with some final words of honesty. Well, true love values honesty far more than a feel-good legacy. So here goes.
Pakistan, you are on a precipice. A wafer-thin sliver is all that stands between you and becoming a failed state. A state that was the culmination of a search for a ‘Muslim space’ by the wealthy Muslims of Northern India has ended up, as MJ Akbar recently pointed out, becoming “one of the most violent nations on earth, not because Hindus were killing Muslims but because Muslims were killings Muslims”.
The assassination of Salmaan Taseer saw not only the death of a man but also represented for me the death of hope in Pakistan. I did not mourn Taseer’s death. I did not know the man. But I mourned what he represented — the death of liberal Pakistan. The governor’s murder reminded us how far the extremist cancer has spread in our society. A cancer in which I saw colleagues and friends on Facebook celebrate his murder. A man murdered for standing up for the most vulnerable in our society — a Christian woman accused of blasphemy. He committed no crime. Instead, he questioned the validity of a man-made law — a law created by the British — that was being used as a tool of repression.
In death, the governor was shunned, unlike his killer, who was praised, garlanded and lionised for shooting Taseer in the back. Mumtaz Qadri became a hero overnight. But Qadri is not just a man — he’s a mindset, as eloquently put by Fifi Haroon. Fascism with an Islamic face is no longer a political or an economic problem in Pakistan, it’s now become a cultural issue. Extremism permeates all strata and socio-economic groups within society. Violent extremists may still make up a minority but extremism now enjoys popular support. As for the dwindling moderates and liberals, they are scared.
Pakistan does not require a secret police, we are in the process of turning upon ourselves. But then what do you expect when your military/intelligence nexus — and their jihadi proxies — have used religious bigotry as a tool of both foreign and domestic policy. It is ironic that the one institution that was designed to protect the idea of Pakistan is the catalyst for its cannibalisation. Christians, Ahmadis, Shias and Barelvis have all been attacked in the past year. Who will be next? Groups once funded and supported by the state have carried out many of these attacks. And many jihadi groups still remain in cahoots with the agencies.
So as I leave Pakistan, I leave her with a sense of melancholy. Personally, for all my early wide-eyed excitement and love for the country and its people, Pakistan has made me cynical, disillusioned and bitter over time. I came here with high hopes, adopting the country, its people and the language. I did find redemption here — but no longer.

I guess George got bored of being a B-list ‘celebrity’ in Pakistan. This should serve as a reminder to everyone to not dedicate a show to someone, invite them to all the major social events of the city and kiss their tail just because they are white.
Many people have commented that this is a “well deserved slap on the face of Pakistan.” I agree that it is well deserved but only because we made the mistake of welcoming people like George who were only out to make money and seek cheap fame.Recommend
Dear George
Thanks for being to Pakistan and having your love of the life. If you see one side and thats happenings, you should also see the other side of depriviation of Pakistan from all over the world in the field of technology now a days. No one questioned in american media about execution of the case of Dr. Afia but always thinks of a christian lady, A Pakistani minister was killed by anyone, if he is christian, the Pope had a reserved right to speak on his/her murder but alot of religious scholars who are muslims died but no one speaks on it. If Ajmal Qassab was 2008 and it shows a bad face to Pakistan in any case then it is Raymond Davis(whatever his name is) in 2011 and it shows a bad face of USA too. If a person(Dr. Afia) can be sentenced to 86 years of prison on attempted murder, what will be your verdict on Raymond Davis on 2 persons murdered in broad day light in front of 100s of witnesses.
Believe me if you are giving divorce to Pakistan, Pakistan was divorced by many before too. But do keep this in mind that Pakistan was been destroyed not by the people’s mentality but the traitors sitting in the ruling class. They are portraying something which we are not actually and its been a long long media stunt going on against Pakistan before such suicide murders, before all such killings of christians.
Anyway have good wishes from my side and just tell the people the truth not being the believer of media only.
Regards,
FaisalRecommend
George it is a difficult proposal if i ask u to stay back, but i tell u that Pakistan is not a failed state. it is we the Pakistanis that we are making it so. But i assure you that it is Almighty that Allah that will help us to recover these cheats and rascals who are at the helm of affairs at present. Our country will certainly rise and get a prominent place in the years to come in the comity of nations. May u live happily to see all that.Recommend
George is not the only who feels disillusioned, in fact, we all do! Promise of a better Pakistan has been the most alluring one, for whom all the visionaries strife hard, but we somehow are dead souls, who can’t change themselves. One after another, incidents of intolerance are representing our overall attitude. I really feel sorry, for us, for Pakistan.Recommend
@Muhammad:
I think George left because he was being harrased by army and intelligence agencies who even threatened and pressured him to leave Pakistan, because he had exposed and criticised them adversely in his recent articles published in ET . He has clearly hinted the same in his part one stating that he feared for his life and didn’t take the decision to leave on his own and even predicted that military should be held responsible for eventual downfall of the country.
However, your comments about your army and intelligence agencies mis-deeds in FATA says it all and also vindicates his decision and even prediction made by him. Muhammad, if sons of the soil are not spared in FATA and Balouchistan in order to support their so called assets and latter pleading for equal rights respectively. So, you can well imagine that what would have happened to poor George if he had decided to challenge your powerful institutions.
Nevertheless, I salute you for your comments on your motherland and do hope that your security forces review their self-destruction and anti-people policies which leading analysts and even George predicted would result in down fall of Pakistan.Recommend

Mr.KK, I just recmmend u 2 read Ali Khan’s recommendation, once again. Hope is the asset we should try to hold on to. Yr comments that the newer generation has taken, freedom from ….., whatever, who has given them this freedom? Its us, who has given our newer generation this attitude. Gone are the days, when if I was wrong,my mother would reprimand me for it. I could not insult my teacher & still get protectection from my parents, why ..? Irrespetive of the fact ,that I was wrong or not, My teacher Should be respected, for that’s what a teacher deserves. My parents never protecected me just bcoz I was their child & I could never be wrong. Or even if i was wrong ,who the heck is the teacher at school, who gets her salary from the fee I pay to the school, to check my child’s misdoings or misbehaving? This was not the way of the generation that brought us up. So,instead of blaming the new generation ,we should as the urdu prverb goes’ apne gariban mein jhankna chhiye’. Or ‘as you sow so shall you reap’. I just pray to the Almighty , to free us from the blame game & give us the courage & wisdom to start improving ourselves,I know many will not agree with me, but still I know most of us use the proverb that “charity begins at home” So let’s start it, today infact right at this hour.May Allah bless sucess in our efforts Amen!Recommend
I feel sorry for myself/us, and then for George…. FOR
For not having the courage to call spade a spade.
For keeping mum whenever somebody says a gibberish in arabic and asking with an authority to listen only & not question.
For fearing that person may kick me/U out of the kingdom of Allah/Islam.
For accepting Islam as a straight jacket system, and not having the courage to correct this perception/preaching through logic and reasoning.
lastly,
For myself/us for not having the courage, to correct the image of Allah (as sign of Love, Compassion, Forgiveness, Peace & Tranquility), against a projected Persona/ image of Allah as a L.D.C with a never forgiving and punishing attitude for its most cherished creation ” Human Beings”Recommend

I would like to believe in what you said. But this time things ARE different. This is the perfect storm. Never has Pakistan seen so many disparate crises come together. In the past, the army was always a pillar of strength. But now their image stands largely dimished. There is not one institution that is in a position of strength. It is as if the edifice of Pakistan has been eaten from the inside by termites. What you now have is a hollow shell that will come down crashing at any time. It is ironic that religion – the very base on which Pakistan as founded, will deal her the final blow.Recommend
I appreciate your affection with my mother land but I dont agree on other point. If you love Pakistan you have to bear all good and bad things. Do you think by leaving this country by all Pakistani’s who love this nation things will change. No. But I am assure we have to tell the bad people to change theirselves and we will definately change their attitude. We will succeed one day. Never stop positive thinking. How many people who dont like the present situtation in Pakistan can decide to leave this country, less then 0001 % . I am more then confident things will change in my country. All the People irrespective of their religion, colour , cast will live in peace. Pakistan is my motherland I and other Pakistani’s cannot and will not even think to leave this country. We will live here, we will prosperous here and we will die here.Recommend

Dear George,
God Bless you and may you find happiness and love outside Pakistan as well. I am a Pakistani and I am proud to be Pakistani despite having a debate within myselft about the behavior and trend Pakistan and Pakistanis are turning too. I have been to many countries in North America including US, Europe , Asia as well to many corners of Pakistan. The general world we dwell in is losing its patience and character overall, some places faster than others. USA is not the USA , it used to be, with people having all the opportunities and equality, especially for Muslims. These fanatics have turned the whole world into a war kind situation and nobody feels safe anywhere. Yes, you may be right that one must be a lot safer outside Pakistan in general perspective. I am not here to defend Pakistan and am not in a position to do so, but I’ll take this opportunity to give my remarks and my feeling about my homeland. I am working abroad and can live anywhere including USA myself but have chosen to live in Pakistan. I have to defend and explain the scenario about Pakistan and Pakistanis to many …I have to face the everyday stories and killings and bombings etc. I know that I am not safe neither is my family there but we need to think about few things… First of all I had really seen and felt love and very high character even in the remote places of Pakistan, as you must have felt during your eye opening early days, so the people of Pakistan are not bad at all but they are very simple, very naïve and puzzled and are lead by fanatics by so called Muslim and political leaders ( the heavy funding is coming from abroad). Poverty and illiteracy is gripping over the sense, sensitivity and patience. Everyone seems to get the most out of the situation except for the poor Pakistani people (I am talking about general masses) and Pakistani state …But if you take out salt from food you would lose the taste similarly if all the good people or people with character would run away (at least who could) what would be the let over (Just Imagine)… By this brain drain are we going to contribute to a better Pakistan or even to make the whole world more safe or vice versa.. The second thing I am really hopeful and pray that God would give us someday and somehow opportunity to live in Peace. Either it’s going to happen after a bloody revolution or by a Miracle but it’s going to happen sooner or later and is inevitable. Third thing we do need to speak and think with open heart is that is it just Pakistani Fanatics doing the bad or trying to break Pakistan or the world leaders ( leading and influential countries) are doing so for their own good and goals. Please do analyze the situation and do not stop thinking and writing with open heart as a journalist and as a human being.
May God bless you, Pakistan the homeland of great tolerant and hospitable people and off course, poor and simple masses of Pakistani Nationals around the world ,
Have a safe and cheerful life with justice and peace for all..
Take care

There exists a difference between real lovers and time pass lovers…..when time comes….time pass lovers have to think about them first….by nature they are bound to leave….and real lovers (e.g. children of the land) have to stay and fight against wrong…and have to die there..For them there exist no option other than total victory or total loss…
This does not mean that those who are leaving are hypocrates….they just cannot reach to the higher levels of love and faith and sincerities.

When moderate voices are silenced without mercy… when the majority of the nation fails to choose between right and wrong due to fear… when extremists try to impose their own version and interpretation of religious beliefs upon others… when the dilemma at hand shows no indication of being solved through peaceful means and logical debate…. after all, who can “logically” convince madmen to see the light, when they themselves are out to (forcefully) impose their will upon others…
Unfortunately, I do not see a “peaceful revolution” in Pakistan, at least in the near future, since that would be “optimism to the point of stupidity”…
When scenario is as described above, I wonder how many more people will realize that their love with their country, their motherland, is a one-sided affair, that, if continued for long, can only result in eventual self-destruction?
For those who continue to “hope”, keep hoping, but while you are at it… do something that might give your hope even a fleeting chance…Recommend

George, yes, leave this place — Pakistan was a tragic creation by egoistic elites who have never had anything to offer that could counter the extremist ideology that has taken deep roots over time, and is now bearing its poisonous fruit. The “liberal-secular values” that the elites and chatterati pin their hope on for the country’s future are unfortunately as much an “import” as you are, with nothing in the the soil that can nourish these values. Partition, by tearing the mass majority of ordinary muslims from the more tolerant, open culture of the Indian subcontinent, has been a far greater tragedy for Pakistan than it was for India.Recommend

Pakistani’s have been ‘living in hope’ since the past 60 years. How much longer is one supposed to ‘live in hope’ for? That’s the standard mantra: ‘living in hope’ and ‘hoping for the best’. A lifetime gone by hoping with no hope in sight. If Pakistan was well and truly a gift of the ‘Almighty’ as stated above, then we have certainly looked a gift horse in the mouth. Instead of being armchair optimists, sitting, praying and hoping for the best to fall in your lap, how about getting up and doing something about it? Actions speak louder than words. If certain, misguided, religious sects can come out into the streets demanding that this country revert back to the stone age, then why can’t the flip side of the coin come forward too? Why are the moderate, educated and those with genuine concern for this country sitting behind closed doors as observers instead of participants? You want change? Get up, make yourself heard and go bring change. It won’t fall into your lap. You’ll never get what you want if you don’t ask for it. Sitting in the sidelines and watching the country unravel while dreaming of ‘hope’ and ‘praying for the best’ will not get you very far. Us Pakistani’s have been the major if not sole contributors to the state this country is in now and by blaming others for all our problems simply exposes our willful inability to admit to our own shortcomings and inaction. Don’t blame others for problems and issues created by your own fellow citizens and Governments. This country has problems, big major problems and only its citizens can solve those problems by taking action to eliminate those problems and not by sitting, observing and hoping. 40+ years ago, Pakistan was a respected and admired country and today it has become a hotbed of extremism, terrorism and ethnic unrest and nobody lifted as much as a finger to nip it in the bud when the time was ripe. If I were a foreigner, I too would not want anything to do with this country anymore. Self preservation is now the core concern. I do not have 9 lives and by constantly saying to myself ‘oh things will get better’ and ‘lets hope for the best’ will get me nowhere. Anyone with young children who witnesses on a daily basis what goes on around him, will most definitely ask himself if this is the environment and future he wants for his kids ‘if’ they grow up, not ‘when’ they grow up. Its good to be optimistic and hopeful, but with the current state of affairs, its hopeless to be hopeful, unless and until one gets up and takes some positive, physical action about it and not just talk about it.Recommend
You know the ship is sinking when the rat’s start to leave :-PRecommend
Dear George,
I understand why you’re going and all – but – it’s not about a country is it? We’re here because of the people. I’ve been here as an expat as long as you (we even shared a language teacher) but I’m not a citizen. When I get down from looking at the politics and terror I have to spend some time with Pakistanis. They are the ones that make it worthwhile. There are still many, many great people here! But they are more scared than you and I, and they can’t leave. Please at least keep them in your prayers. All the best to you and your family! You have encouraged many with your work and great heart!

Ignore the comments that say “bye george and don’t come back etc.”
I would implore you to stay, for if every liberal leaves, we will be outnumbered by these bearded lunatics who dare to impersonate the Prophet (PBUH) and the values he represented – and I am not even a religious person!
Stay. And be counted.Recommend
Well Buddy, I know exactly how you feel. Lets just say you needed a break to freshen your mind.
But there is one thing you do not know – you have left Pakistan but it would not leave you no matter how hard you try.
You will feel it in your heart’s deepest corner calling you.
So if you thought you can move on after this divorce and put your life back again – it wont happen. This is the burden all Pakistanis carry – we all try to escape it but it does not work.
So rise up and brace your destiny – you are and you shall always be a Pakistani it is the scarlet letter embroidered on your soul now.Recommend

Dear George,
I dont know much about you and what you where doing pakistan but i know you had a heart and you must have tried to learn about us with sincerity .. but the conclusion that you have made here is very sad and very superficial … reality is much more different then as it appears to be..
but since you are leaving with a note that pakistan is about to become a fail state… just keep your eyes and ears open and in few years when you find pakistan progressing in an astonishing way !! and when you can see pakistan’s big accomplishment and when you see pakistan emerging as one the greatest nation in the world …. then only please just give your self another thought and make sure that you realize that you were wrong in your opinion and you really did not penetrated the reality !!!
any ways , good bye!! take a very good care of your self and keep your heart open!!Recommend

Assalam-O-Alqum George i have read whatever u have written in Ur article ” George Ka Khuda Hafiz” my friend u r right in Ur thoughts and experience but up to some extent. Your article is very discouraging and sound like a defeated man i think u have forgotten the lesson of King Bruce ” Try and Try Again ” every country has difficulties and problems of its own kind. Does America has no problems for the people who naturalized over there from different part of the world. I think if u go any where in the world, even your own homeland trust me u wont be able to earn such respect and popularity which u have earned in Pakistan. Now why u r blaming poor masses of Pakistan. infect u lost hope and that is “ha-ram” in Islam brother. One must not lose hope and struggle through thick and thin. I think leaving Pakistan is your biggest mistake. you will always miss Pakistan. Pakistan Zida Abad.

But what i dont understand is that what were you expecting. This is as far as any country in the world would welcome you, and trust me when i say that i know. Ive lived and worked( legally) in the US.
In my opinion you if not anything else were welcomed more and lived as a celebrity which is a privileged class. So you buddy don’t have any right to complain.

O ye of little faith! :)
Pakistan is an idea deeply rooted in spirituality. It matters little to our existence what you think or do not think.
After the downright disgusting case of the so-called Raymond Davis I think it becomes quite clear that Pakistan is under attack – the adversary being one who has no conscience and no value for human life.
You have, unfortunately, turned into just another voice of judgement and negativity. You never loved the Pakistan you speak of – you were simply an observer.
Please do not claim any feelings for this country-you lie not just to yourself but to an entire nation. We are larger than you and your thoughts.
We who have lost our near and dear in the struggle for our survival against dark forces – we will NEVER lose faith nor hope.
Goodbye – and farewell in your Utopia.Recommend
Its seems George had never completely accepted Pakistan as his homeland, otherwise these are the very challenges he should have braved to face and help eradicate. Escape is not a solution, and the corrupt and wrong-doers do not own Pakistan. George simply threw down his guantlet and chose an easy way out!!Recommend
If our love for you was conditional then what about you? True love never asks for any terms or conditions and if You really loved this country you would have accepted it just as it is..and tried to work for the betterment of itRecommend

I do believe that the series that promulgated to immediate fame “George ka Pakistan” was well received, not because it casted a naive gora trying to adapt to a different culture, but because it reinforced to us all the nation that we live in. It reproduced images that have moulded to become our identity, and reminded us of the alien notion of national integrity.
As I read this article, it becomes obvious to me that through this individual, we were on a journey of rediscovery. His efforts post-George ka Pakistan were simple questions that I and many individuals have encountered. Yet we withhold them as innate frustrations merely because we “know” that our efforts will be in vain, and that if there is any effect, its bound to be a negative one for us, personally.
George’s departure marks a failure and disappointment for us all. I can only hope that through some miracle or divine intervention, we are able to atleast challenge or contest the status quo, rather than let our fates be alienated from us and be judged by people that do not hold our interests at heart.Recommend
pakistan is just going through sad times.. and they will go away sooon… we just need to wake up as a nation … gudbye george….many georges are still in love with pakistan … they come and go and will come and go forever …best of luck !Recommend
Thanks Almighty Allah, you are going. It is people like you who try to flee when there is time of need, because of whom Pakistan has come to this stage. How many times you have voted for some one really Nice and Honest Person to be elected. There is much more that can be written. I’ll just say that “A friend in need is a friend indeed”. Thanks that you have exposed yourself.Recommend
Disappointed to see George abandon Pakistan on such a publicly negative note….”honesty” is not appreciated when it is confessed to the wrong audience with a naive view that does not understand or acknowledge politics and it’s wmd: poverty.
George: pls study the sources that provide our country with “aid” and ask yourself which countries’ social agenda’s are being set into motion for every penny that our government receives. And why does this aid astonishingly lead to a further downward spiral for (nuclear) Pakistan. It would be naive to think it’s because there are simply extremist people that like to kill…. write a note to the source of the problem; the politicians that exploit poverty.
Some of today’s most successful nations have 1000% more blood on their hands than pakistan…. How could they have accepted slavery? nuclear bombings on Hiroshima? colonialism? holocausts? Massacre of Native Americans?
The citizens of these countries did not turn their back – they stood by their country and made it a better place. With this note, you have not only turned your back on your country, but have attempted to justify it by ignorance and naivete.
Please don’t be honest with us, just walk away!Recommend
George is leaving but can millions of peace loving & educated,as also uneducated who have not gone through radicalised education deviously devised by Zia & co have this option?Answer is clearly know.Way has to be found of retreating from this ruinous pathI believe majority of pakistanis are still peace loving & will do anything to live a peace loving & better life.Somebody has to provide the leadership. But people like pravez & imran just want to make use of this hysteria for their own benefit..it has to be someone different.Recommend

hey george this was a lovely country, there was freedom and peace. in writing what you wrote, you overlooked the jokers who pushed our rulers to spread panic that Islam was in danger. Created the Taliban, ousted the Taliban. supported and still support a string of crooked rulers in Pakistan. write about the countries who accept billions from despotic tyrants and then when the masses rise up in revolt, freeze their assets. try writing on these points. it will be more relevant to our position then, dont duck the real issues. try being Micheal Moore. BRING OUT THE ROOT CAUSES. if you cannot do that then withdraw this article of yours as a sick and crude joke.Recommend

Dear George
I dont want to say Goodbye. I dont want you to leave. Pakistan doesnt want you to leave. We dont want you to remember us by what you have described in your column. For us, you were not a guest. For guests, we use the word Good Bye for ever. You were a family member, a fellow Pakistani. We can say Good bye to see you again back in Pakistan.
We know you have had seen and felt the oppressing extremism and depressing situations in Pakistan, but do you think this is true Pakistan. A few hundred militants occupying the land of pure terrifying us and killing us.
Critically important and dismayed was Pakistan when people like Qadri take arms in the name of Islam. Have you ever seen a half-literate man self-medicating him? He is killing himself. We are killing ourselves. Not because we want suicide. but we think we are doing a very right thing. Would you leave such a person without helping him, while you have that family feeling to it?
Regardless of what is going on, George, we will remember you. We will be looking at those paths to see if George is coming back. I know you will 100% agree that not all Pakistanis are fanatics. you would also agree that even those living in tribal belt and the hub of extremism have people who are torch bearers of decency, hospitality, of accommodating attitude and peace.
I also think you will agree that there are fanatics in modern world (Islamabad to New York, Sydney to Moscow), fanatics and extremists of their own make and model. Fanatics who stick to their thoughts and dont budge to reason. I dont want to be defensive however, you will find different types of fanatics and extremists everywhere. This world is full of such people. We have more of them. We are ill. We need people to help us out. We need you and others like you to tell us, where we are wrong. May be we are not willing to listen to you. but probably some of us may change. That little change…will count.
I am representing Pakistan to tell all those friends from other origins adopting Pakistan, “you are part of us, your presence is so much valued. Dont leave us now that we are ill”.
I hope you can understand the feelings of Pakistanis from the comments you received. The rest is up to you.
Dont expect Good Bye…

Good Luck Mr.Fulton… whatever you said, it is your perception. but I don’t agree with you and this is my belief. you lived here, earned love and respect from us. you got the citizenship as well but getting citizenship can’t make anyone a citizen of that state. its more about your soul. and your soul doesn’t belong this this state. your sail failed to belong to this state which made you believe that its because the state it self is a failed one.
I have observed and seen people showering love and respect at you from their hearts. can your countrymen do this, to that much extent. oh no.. I’m not criticizing anyone, for blaming you for anything. I’m just sharing my perception with you, like you just did.
you came here with a hope. but if you have lost this hope it means that you had no hope at all. again, that was just your perception of hope. hope breeds in hearts and not in minds Sir.
Pakistan is not a failed state and Pakistanis are not headless or emotionless people. its just a few bunch of people, and such people exist in every culture and in every state.
you found is bad that people are celebrating a liberal politician’s death, but what about all the other stuff celebrated on facebook by the rest of the world! such people exist everywhere then why just blame Pakistan and its people.
you were not blindfolded by her love, you were looking someone else in her face and were expected her to act like someone else.
you tried to be a Pakistani, but you can never be a Pakistani. its not your fault. its like if I get British citizenship and start living here and though I’ll develop deep love for it but I won’t ever be able to forget my first love. I can only pretend to forget her or may be for some time don’t think of her. but at the end of the day, my heart will still be singing the songs of my soul. I still be happy if Pakistani team do well in sports. I’ll jumping around after getting some good news from my soil. though I would be in love with the other place. but deep inside, I won”t be able to get ride of my roots somewhere, somehow. something, atleast a tiny drop of my sands will stay with me, for ever, no matter how much I go away from her.
you tried. we appreciated it. you were our guests but in our culture we have a tendency of making our guests, our family members. but we realize that you have to leave. you have to turn back to you land, you winds, your sunshines.
so no need for any justifications or strange reasonings. its your right to go back. and we wish you and your family all the very best.Recommend

George let me ask you this, how long did it take your forefathers to give black people their rights? let me ask you this, the land of your country how exactly did you gain it? buddy it took you people 300+ years to give basic rights to the black people, you stole your land from others, i am a proud PAKISTANI we fought for our rights and our land and we earned it, he have been here for only 70 years and i am proud to say we are better off the you, we have morals and values which your country lacks. You are a quieter thats why you are leaving Pakistan, we are working towards a better era sadly it does not happen overnight, but i assure the day it happens you all will see the glory and the true power which Pakistan possesses, PAKISTAN ZINDABAAADRecommend
Thanks George for wonderful memories. I really understand how you have gone through during that period of change which also push many Pakistanis to leave due to the same reasons. But I believe things will get better with a passage of time and we may meet again.. Until then good luck for all future endeavors….Recommend
still, there is hope.Recommend
Well the greatest irony in all this is, that the man who was embraced by all and sundry including the PM (almost) is being ignored into oblivion.
We have become an apathetic nation…..where the only hope I see is more Georges going out of Pakistan…cos the ppl wont change, the liberal fascists will remain the same; the bigoted extremist wont cease to kill in the name of religion and the so called “common man” will remain so blindly caught up in his own life that he could kill his own mother for money (just like happened in Lahore recently).
pity the nation Pakistan….u will continue to lose ppl who care for u, and care for others….the real Pakistanis are long gone
Thanks for the love affair…we enjoyed it till it lasted!
Tumhara Allah haafiz George…g luck with your second coming to the UK. Keep in touch with our warped reality tho…cos Pakistan (in a twisted sorta way) will remain part of your identity (perhaps?).

Jinnah would never give up. You need to come back sir. Even better, when Jinnah got disillusioned by the religious conservatives in British India who were against the Pakistan Movement and the Congress that had sworn to drown the Pakistan Movement – Jinnah actually left and went to England for a few years. He gained strength and came back to lead Pakistan to win its freedom again.

Dear George! May Allah’s blessings shower upon you. Pakistan might be a state too close to be called “failed state” and we all are equally responsible for it, media projecting only the negative part of the picture, politicians betraying their own mother nation, so called Islamic scholars failing to represent true religion. But apart from all of these facts, a man should never give up hope. I (and there are millions like me) am still hopeful that one day insha Allah you will witness revolutionary change in Pakistan just like China and Iran, maybe greater. But these are only sentimental statements for now.
It is really sad to know you’re leaving. But I agree to the majority on this blog that you will return someday.
