The owner of Bastay, unlocks her vault and shares her unconditional love for bags

How/when did you get interested in bags?

For as long as I can remember, matching my handbag with a pair of earrings and shoes was always a priority for me, but I never knew I would end up making bags myself. I started Bastay back in 2012, but it wasn’t until 2014, while I was working as a wedding planner, that I decided to put in all my efforts and creativity into taking Bastay full swing. It was perfect timing, as at that time the local market lacked good quality handbags and clutches.

What is your favourite bag that you own?

My all-time favourite bag would be this truck art, hand-painted clutch, which has my name on it. A truck artist painted it and I love the personalisation aspect of it. I am obsessed with things that have my name on them.

Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to and why?

I love my mother’s wedding clutch! It’s a gold, boxed clutch and I still have it with me. It is very dear to me as it is my mother’s and it was with her on her big day. I make sure it is kept in perfect condition.

Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces?

Other than my mother’s bridal clutch, I love my Bastay bags, especially the ‘Kellogg’s Clutch’. It was actually a very dear client of mines idea, which I designed for her last year. But it turned out to be such a quirky and fun piece, that I ended up keeping one for myself too.

Is there anything on your radar that you want to get or make in the future?

Lets just not talk about the things I want to get or make — the list is endless! I do plan on making bags for working women, which are not only practical but also cool and edgy. Something that will make their work routine feel more fun.
