NEPRA allows 33 paisa per unit increase

Published: February 25, 2011

The new electricity prices will come into effect after the federal government issues a formal notification.

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has allowed power distribution companies to raise the electricity tariff by 33 paisa per unit, under the monthly fuel price adjustment formula.

According to sources, a request forwarded to Nepra, through the Central Power Purchasing Agency, by power distribution companies was heard at Nepra headquarters on Thursday.

At the hearing, Nepra officials examined figures provided by distribution companies, who had sought an increase of 39 paisa per unit as part of fuel adjustment for January.

However, Nepra officials allowed a 33 paisa per unit increase in the tariff, which will come into effect after the issuance of a notification, for which a copy of the decision has been forwarded to the government.

It is not justified that NEPRA may agree in increasing tariff every now and
then instead of examining the root causes .
There is a requiment of setting up a committee in order to look into delays in payments of
outstanding dues by different consumers of electicity. I can quote recent example of
Rangers in Karachi who defaulted on non payment of dues. There are also other
government departments who are defaulters. I would request concerned authorties to look
intro this aspect before imosing additional tariffs.Recommend
