As one of Hong Kong’s most celebrated film-makers, Wong Kar-wai often takes three or four-year breaks in between his films. Therefore, it is not surprising that his fans have been particularly anxious as of late for updates on a new Kar-wai feature, given that it’s been three years since The Grandmaster opened to strong reviews and two Oscar nominations.

Kar-wai has kept things relatively quiet in the interim, announcing he will be co-producing and co-directing an online drama series in China. But, according to indiewire.com, it looks like word regarding the director’s anticipated return to moviemaking is now out.

Briefly mentioned and confirmed in a new The Hollywood Reporter profile on Annapurna founder Meagn Ellison, it appears Kar-wai is attached to direct the long-gestating Gucci family drama that has been circulating around Hollywood for the past couple years. According to reports, the film was originally going to be directed by Ridley Scott, with Angelina Jolie and Leonardo DiCaprio set to star, but that project never came to be. Now rumor has it that Margot Robbie is courting offers to work in the upcoming film.

The story centers around the murder of Maurizio Gucci, grandson of company founder Guccio Gucci. Robbie would presumably play Patrizia Reggiani, who was convicted and sent to prison for killing her ex-husband. Screenwriters Andrea Berloff of World Trade Center and Charles Randolph of The Big Short have worked on drafts of the script, but there’s no confirmation as to which writer is being credited on the final.

The project is apparently in the very early stages of development but it joins Annapurna’s prestigious slate that includes Kathryn Bigelow’s untitled Detroit Riots drama and Bennett Miller’s A Christmas Carol adaptation.
