LAHORE: Paramilitary soldiers have foiled an attempt to smuggle Indian liquor and weapons into Pakistan from the Indian side at Kailon in the Kasur sector on Friday.

“In the wee hours of Friday, the paramilitary force took action and foiled an attempt to smuggle liquor and weapons in the Kasur sector,” said a statement by the Punjab Rangers. “The paramilitary troops noticed suspicious movement of some individuals from the Indian side. Upon being challenged, the individuals opened fire on Rangers’ personnel instead of identifying themselves.

“The rangers effectively responded to the fire by engaging two of the smugglers while two more smuggles, taking advantage of darkness and shrubbery, escaped back towards the Indian side by dropping contraband items,” the statement added.

More than 100 bottles of Indian liquor, weapons and two mobile phones were recovered during the search operation launched by the Rangers after the shootout.

“The corpses of two smugglers have been handed over to the local authorities for further investigation. Initial clues indicate that the smugglers were able to freely move across the fence along the international border, which is not possible without the support of the BSF.

“It also suggests that heroin smuggling towards the Indian side through the fence is also having similar underhand linkages.” The director general of Pakistan Rangers (Punjab) appreciated the swift and affective action by paramilitary soldiers and urged them to continue their efforts to eradicate this nefarious trade.
