KARACHI: Pakistani music producer Sharif Awan’s project Indus Raag has been nominated for the Independent Music Awards (IMA), annually held in the United States. Awan has been nominated in the World Music and Special Edition Craft categories.

IMAs are one of the top-rated indie awards covering the worldwide music industry. Names of about 400 nominees for 80 categories were announced in New York on October 18. The award-winners will be announced on November 12, 2016.

In the official press release, Awan said he hopes that such international recognition will be instrumental in promoting Pakistani culture and arts in the global community.

Earlier, Awan won a gold and a silver medal at the Global Music Awards this year. The first Indus Raag was also shortlisted for the Grammy Awards last year while the second part has also been accepted as an entry in the 59th Grammy Awards, to be held in February next year.

Awan founded Tehzeeb Foundation of Pakistan, along with his wife Malahat Awan in 2009. Together they created a reservoir of classical music, by collecting works of Pakistan’s oldest and renowned classical musicians. They did so by recording and releasing them in the form of albums.

Moreover, Tehzeeb Foundation has previously organised concerts and festivals celebrating indigenous instruments such as Sitar and Sarangi. The festivals featured instrumentalists from across the world including Grammy Award winner Vishwa Mohan Bhatt.
