KARACHI: Muhammad Abbas’ eight-wicket haul in the second innings against Karachi Whites led KRL to a huge 149-run win on the third day of their Pool A fixture in the third round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy at the National Stadium of Karachi yesterday.

Karachi Whites, needing 276 more runs to win, resumed day three on 30-0. They lost their first wicket on 53 and the wickets kept tumbling on regular basis from there on in, losing their remaining nine for just 156 runs in 54.3 overs.

Abbas starred with figures of 8-46 while left-arm spinner Nayyar Abbar claimed 2-49.

Abbas — who was the highest wicket-taker in the last edition of the tournament, resulting in him being selected for Pakistan A — is aiming to top the bowling charts once more in order to stake a claim in the senior national side.

“I have been working on my speed for this edition at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore,” Abbas told The Express Tribune. “Tabish Khan had more wickets than I did when the season began so that inspired me to up the ante,” he said. “I know my limitations and variations and I apply those after reading the batsman and pitch condition.”

In a Pool B match at the Arbab Niaz Stadium, UBL’s bowlers dismissed Peshawar for just 109 in the second innings, setting themselves a simple target of 101.

In another Pool B match, Muhammad Naeem scored 96 runs to help FATA post a total of 342 in their second innings at the Jinnah Stadium to set PIA a 345-run target, who were in trouble at 3-33.

At the Gaddafi Stadium, Muhammad Rizwan struck 167 runs off 264 balls along with Adnan Akmal scoring 107 off as many balls to help SNGPL score 545-9 (dec), with a lead of 178 over Lahore Whites. At the end of play, Lahore Whites were batting on 39-0.

At the Diamond Ground, all three results are possible as Rawalpindi go into day four on 197-7 in their second innings, 210 runs ahead of NBP.

Meanwhile in Pool A, a century by Asif Zakir (128) and half-centuries by Awais Zia (78) and Shoaib Malik (74) helped SSGC score 423 in their first innings against Lahore Blues. At the end of play, Lahore Blues were batting in their second innings on 60-2, trailing by 90 runs.
