SUKKUR: The Sindh High Court Sukkur bench reissued notices to the health and finance secretaries, directing them to file their comments on timescale promotions for doctors working in upper Sindh.

The division bench, comprising Justice Shahid Anwar Bajwah and Justice Tufail G Ibrahim, issued these notices on a constitutional petition filed by 175 MBBS doctors, including Dr Usman Mako, Dr Safdar Soomro and others, through their lawyer, Shabbir Shar.

According to the lawyer, the doctors appointed in Sindh from 1987 onwards on pay scale 17 are being denied promotions to higher scales. Meanwhile, doctors in other provinces are getting promotions on the timescale basis, he said.

Shar added that several of these doctors are on the verge of retirement because they have served for more than 20 years at pay scale 17 or 18. The doctors filed this petition in December 2010 and the court asked the secretaries to file their comments but to no avail.

On Thursday, a representative of Sindh health secretary filed comments, saying that the secretary has no objection to granting timescale but the finance secretary has to make the decision.

The hearing was adjourned till March 2.
