India’s Aam Admi Party (AAP) has demanded the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) apologise for ‘damaging’ the reputation of the country’s armed forces through the statements of its defence minister and spokesperson.
“Defence Minister Manohar Parikar and BJP spokesperson Narasimha Rao have insulted the 70-year-old history of the Indian army through their statements,” AAP leader Sanjay Singh said on Thursday. He said his party will register a complaint against them with police unless they apologise.
The demand comes after several Indian political leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who belongs to AAP, cast doubts over the BJP government and Indian military’s claims of carrying out ‘surgical’ strikes in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Kejriwal, in a video statement posted on Facebook, had urged the BJP government to release purported video evidence of the covert raids. Others, like Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam, refused to believe Indian army carried out the alleged strikes unless evidence was made public.
Independent Indian-Occupied Kashmir lawmaker Engineer Rashid, meanwhile, has said the Indian army is busy filming a fake video which it intends to present as evidence of the so-called surgical strikes.
