At loggerheads: Man petitions court to lodge FIR against police officers

Claims officials illegally detained his family members and took away valuables

HARIPUR: A resident of Peepal Maira in Khoee Nara village, has accused officials at Khanpur police of raiding his house, illegally detaining his paternal granddaughter, her husband and other family members before taking away valuable items. He also accused the police of implicating his sons and other relatives in a fabricated case. Officials, however, denied the accusations claiming that case is a means to divert attention from his wanted grandson.

Jamal Din filed a case in the district court on Tuesday. The district police officer, Khanpur SHO and three other policemen were made respondents in the case. The court issued notices to parties for September 30.

Turn of events

Din’s lawyers Advocate Jawad Habib and Advocate Malik Rab Nawaz said that two policemen of Pind Muneem post—later identified as Head Constable Shahbaz and Constable Tauqir—were in looking for Din’s maternal grandson Bilal.

Bilal was wanted by the police in a minor case of disturbing the peace (Section 107 of CrPC). On July 29, police officials barged into Din’s house during the wedding ceremony of his paternal granddaughter and caused commotion while searching for Bilal.

The police searched the room where the bridegroom and other women were sitting. They allegedly beat the women and children.

The police also called for reinforcements and a large contingent of police headed by ASI Nawaz reached the spot and beat Din’s son Muhammad Shafi among other guests. During this commotion, someone opened fire which caused the police mobile van to catch fire. Din said the police caused them a loss of around Rs600,000.

When contacted, Khanpur police station SHO Khan Afsar denied all charges. He said the accused are pressurising the police to divert attention from Bilal’s case and that the complainant and his family members had in fact attacked the policemen.
