Enfranchisement: ECP registers 97 transgenders as voters

The newly-registered members can now contest provincial, national and Senate elections

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday registered 97 people who are transgender as voters in the Preliminary Electoral Rolls (PERs) for Rawalpindi.

According to an official of the electoral authority, the newly-registered members can now contest provincial, national and Senate elections.

According to PERs, the total number of registered voters in Rawalpindi district stands at 2.29 million. Of these 1.23 million voters are men and 1.06 million voters are women. During a NADRA campaign to verify electoral rolls, the body sent out a list of 92,519 new voters out of which only 80,037 were verified during last month’s door-to-door vote verification campaign.
