ISLAMABAD: Almost two third of all Pakistanis (64 per cent) disapprove of billboards with pictures of women on them as opposed to 31 per cent who say that women images in the advertisements on roadsides and in markets make no difference. There are substantial provincial differences.

According to a Gilani Research Foundation survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the country were asked the following question:
Billboards placed along the roadsides and in markets have pictures of women. Some people believe that there should not be pictures of women on billboards while others say it makes no difference to them, what is your opinion?

Sixty four percent disapproved of billboards with pictures of women whereas 31 per cent said that there is nothing wrong with such advertisements. Five per cent gave no response.

Provincial differences

Views in Sindh are almost equally divided between the two views: 52 per cent opposed the use of women in billboards, whereas 46 per cent found it acceptable.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 76 per cent opposed women in billboards, while 22 per cent said it was acceptable; in Punjab 66 per cent opposed, while 27 per cent said it was acceptable; in Balochistan 57 per cent opposed, while 40 per cent found it acceptable.

The survey also revealed that slightly more rural dwellers (66 per cent) disapprove of billboards with pictures of women as compared to their urban counter parts (59 per cent). However, there was no gender difference in the response.
