Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik has hit back at former fast-bowler Wasim Akram’s claim that the 34-year-old looked “disinterested” in matches during the tour of England this summer.

Wasim had earlier commentated that Malik lacked leadership skills, stating that a senior player should have a more active attitude on the field.

“Malik has really disappointed me,” said Wasim during match commentary. “He goes to third man in the field and stands out there.”

The former pacer added: “His job as a senior player should be to talk to the bowlers, help his captain and I have not seen that happening at all. From the outside he has looked disinterested and not very keen for most of the series.”

When asked about Wasim’s comments, Malik said that the veteran bowler should have focused on the positives while commentating.

“I understand that you have to talk about something when commentating, and when you don’t have anything then you have to come up with something which attracts people who are listening to you,” said Malik.

“However, I totally disagree with his statement but I respect him a lot. I would not expect these comments from a legend. I am sure he will realise this in the future and come up with something positive for us.”

The all-rounder further said that he is a team player, citing the example of him batting wherever his captain ordered him to.

“I am one of those who has batted everywhere in the top order,” he said. “I think for me the team comes first, so wherever the team needs me I am always up for that number.”

Malik was selected in 15-man squad for the three-match T20I series against the West Indies in the UAE which commences this Friday.

shoaib shibi | 7 years ago | Reply He shoulb be thrown away from the team because he did play will under Afridi's captaincy and now under Azhar Ali leadership he did the same as well it is therefore, he is not deserving player in pak team
Grow up | 7 years ago | Reply Malik was one of the most promising players under Wasim's leadership. I remember one game where wasim gave him the last over to ball as a spinner and that speaks heaps about his confidence w.r.t. Malik. So he expects more from Malik, nothing wrong with that. Now Malik response shows that he still needs to go a long way to actually mature. Maturity is not having a straight face infront of everyone, maturity also taking positive criticism and then working on your weaknesses. He needs to go to the captain and tell him what he can offer on the pitch, if the captain needs his help then he will listen to him, if he does not then he will ask him to field on the boundary. In that case, he keeps trying till he succeed. The problem is that Malik still thinks that he is more privileged because he was an ex captain, what he needs to understand is that people showing good attitude and willingness on the field are the ones who get noticed. Why does he has to bat on different batting position, why doesn't he fight for one position and then prove himself worthy of it. Azhar Ali needs all the help that he can get, and shoaib can offer him what he needs and help him succeed. Only then he will regain his respect and confidence. I like Shoaib a lot but he needs to grow up and up his game.
