LAHORE: The organising committees of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) for Central and South Punjab have finalised their recommendations for selecting the office-bearers of the party in the province, party insiders have told The Express Tribune.

Rana Farooq Ahmad and Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood are likely to be appointed as presidents for Central Punjab and South Punjab, respectively, the PPP sources said. The final decision will be announced by the party soon but these names are almost finalised, they added.  However, Ahmed Mehmood was the only candidate for the position.

In Central Punjab, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and Nadeem Afzal Chan were the strong candidates but consensus of most people is on the name of Rana Aftab, a PPP leader requesting anonymity told The Express Tribune.

The organising committee for South Punjab has completed its work and a meeting was held in Lahore three days ago where former PM Yousaf Raza Gilani, Mehmood, Tochi Khan and Shaukat Basra were among the attendants.

Mehmood told The Express Tribune the impression that PPP had lost ground in Punjab was not true. “We fought local government election in Rahim Yar Khan on PPP’s ticket and won. It is just about faith and reaching out to people,” he said.

“The recommendations will be sent to PPP chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari, who will take final decision over the appointment of party leadership,” Gilani said.
