With the aim to develop a robust educational governance mechanism, the first National Convention of Parents’ Ittehad will be held at a local hotel today (Monday).

Moreover, the Federal Minister of State for Higher Education and Professional Training, Balighur Rehman, will inaugurate the convention.

The Rural Support Programmes Network (RSPN) is organising the convention.

The list of persons who are set to take part in the convention includes representatives of Parents’ Ittehad, members of local support organisations (LSOs), parliamentarians, donors, educationists, researchers, and activists.

The keynote speech will be given by the DFID Deputy Country Head, Judith Herbertson.

The Parents’ Ittehad is a community-based network which works for the improvement of educational standards through engagement with relevant stakeholders.

The network strives to improve enrolment rates, retention and learning outcomes.

The Ittehad has developed a charter of demands to underline the pressing issues faced by schools at the district level.

“128,799 students, including 49,626 girls, have been enrolled under the project so far,” said Humera Hussain, project manager.

“949 schools were improved in terms of infrastructure, including construction of boundary walls, toilets, the provision of clean drinking water and furniture,” she added.

The convention is being seen as a milestone in terms of advocating for enhanced and effective community participation as a tool to end the education crisis in Pakistan.
