ISLAMABAD: Polyclinic Deputy Executive Director Dr Iftikhar Naru, who along with other doctors was arrested over alleged embezzlement in the procurement of medical supplies, has been hospitalised.

He was first shifted to the Polyclinic Hospital on complaints of infection in his lungs but later he was referred to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) for possible tuberculosis complication.

Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU) Vice-Chancellor Dr Javed Akram said that Dr Naru’s lungs were filled with water that was caused either by stress or tuberculosis.

“Some of the water has been pumped out for conducting tests and we are waiting for the results,” he said.

On the directives of the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) over alleged irregularities in the procurement of medical gases and allied services for the Polyclinic hospital, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested Dr Naru, Dr Zulkifl Sabir, Dr Azmat Humayun Sumbal, Dr Farrukh Iqbal and the Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD) Section Officer, Farhan Sikandar, for further investigation.

The agency had launched an inquiry and found out that irregularities had taken place in the procurement process.

The FIA officials said procurement rules were violated on four counts in 2013-2014 to control the bidding process, resulting in a loss of Rs30 million to the public exchequer.

A parliamentary committee had also criticised the procurement of oxygen and nitrogen kits at higher rates and directed the CADD to take action against the officials responsible.
