ISLAMABAD: Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf on Tuesday invited the Pakistan Peoples Party to join its protest rally in Lahore on September 3 in an effort to garner support for its Tehreek-e-Ehtesab (Accountability Movement) from all opposition parties.

The show in the powerbase of the ruling PML-N will mark the climax of the ongoing anti-government public campaign by the PTI.

Vice chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi personally met opposition leader Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah and Senator Aitzaz Ahsan and extended the invitation on behalf of the party leadership. The PPP leaders said the matter would be discussed with senior leadership for a decision.

“The PPP and the PTI are on the same page [when it comes to policy stand on the Panama leaks],” Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Aitzaz Ahsan said.

Talking about the opposition’s stance on the Panama leaks, Ahsan said we are on the same page: that the process of investigation should start from the prime minister.

“Secondly, he said the names of the PM’s children are in the Panama papers; therefore, we think that he should be given the opportunity to clarify his position. “And third, it is not possible that there is an investigation into the Sharif family’s [offshore holdings] and the PM and his team define the terms of reference.”

The senior PPP leader said the opposition will present a bill [for investigations into the Panama leaks] in parliament in a couple of days, and urged the government not to oppose it.
