LAHORE: Data of more than 30,000 prisoners has been computerised under Prison Management Information System, Abdullah Waris, the department additional secretary said on Sunday.

He said the project had been launched by the Prisons Department and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. He said data of 200,000 prisoners would be computerised. The project had been launched to improve the security situation, control crime and monitor convicts after they were released. A pilot project has been introduced at Camp Jail. “The system will be introduced at 19 more major incarceration facilities in the province.”

He said record of convicts who had completed their sentence would be maintained. “This will next include details of their housing and employment situation.” He said it would also keep record of their fingerprints and criminal history. He said prisons officials were being trained in use of the system. He said a steering committee had been formed to supervise progress on the project.
