Rights activist condemns govt’s inability to act timely

PESHAWAR: At least two women were injured when their neighbours and relatives opened fire on them in their house in Surizai within the jurisdiction of Badabher police station on Saturday. They have been identified as Amina and her 12-year-old daughter Sana.

Both the injured were rushed to Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) where Sana’s condition is stated to be critical.

Amina told the police at LRH that she was a resident of Surizai. She said her neighbours and relatives Asad, Aslam and their father Rustam entered her house and opened fire on her and her teenage daughter.

“One of the accused had sent a marriage proposal to my daughter but since she is still a child and we were also not too happy with the man’s character, we refused.” She added after receiving repeated refusals, Asad, Aslam and their father Rustam entered their house and shot at them.

“They wanted to kidnap my daughter but when she refused to go with them, they opened fire on us and then fled,” Amina added.

The police registered an FIR against the three accused and started investigation.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, rights activist Rukhshanda Naz said the main problem was lack of response from the government and its institution despite the availability of all kind of resources.“Let us take the example of the UK national who was killed by her former husband in Pakistan,” Naz said. “The UK government has asked the Pakistani government to investigate the matter.” She said we have yet to see a quick response from the government or any one of its countless institutions,” Naz said. She added neither the government nor the police were fully equipped to deal with alarming situations.
