KARACHI: Anwar Ahmed Zai, the chairperson of the Board of Secondary Education, Karachi (BSEK), was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Thursday.

He is being questioned about his involvement in corruption in the Board of Intermediate Education, Mirpurkhas.

NAB spokesperson Zameer Abbasi confirmed that Zai, who previously held the post of Mirpurkhas board chairperson, was arrested for his involvement in illegal appointments during his tenure in Mirpurkhas.

An arrest warrant against Zai was issued a few days ago, informed Abbasi. NAB took action against him after confirming the cases of illegal appointments under his chairpersonship.

The BSEK chairperson was also found to be involved in embezzlement of funds and tampering with intermediate examination results in the Mirpurkhas and Karachi boards.

Zai has also served at the Board of Intermediate Education, Karachi, before joining BSEK. The intermediate board recently came in the limelight for having been raided by the Anti-Corruption Establishment and the arrest of its deputy controller of examinations for altering results.

The board spokesperson said Zai will be presented in the court soon as a reference has been filed against him in the corruption cases.
