Seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher is recovering and responding to treatment for his brain injuries, says ex-Ferrari chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo.

His statement came after it was being said that Michael’s condition was deteriorating following his skiing accident in 2014 in which the world champion had suffered brain injuries.

Montezemolo had said in February that Michael’s health was “not good”.

However, he has contradicted his earlier claims and given hope to thousands of Michael's fans.

“I’m very pleased to know that he is reacting," he said on Monday. “I know how strong he is. I’m sure that thanks to his determination, which will be crucial, he will come out from this very, very difficult situation.”

Michael's manager Sabine Kehm said at the opening of an exhibition in Marburg, Germany in February that it was important to remind everyone of his achievements who had been seven-time world champion.

"He is the most successful driver in history and sometimes, on days like this, it is good to be reminded of it. Of course, Michael is not here and of course we miss him. We know what has happened and cannot change it.

"We must accept it and hope with everything we have that with continued support and patience he will one day be back with us. Racing was his life and no one would have liked to have been here more than him."

Since the accident, he had been receiving special medical treatment and care at his home on the shores of Lake Geneva since September 2014, with many believing he had been paralysed and is also in coma.
