KARACHI: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Karachi director-general Lt Col (retd) Sirajul Naeem handed over cheques amounting to Rs151.896 million to the Sindh governor for further distribution on Monday.
The amount was recovered in major cases of corruption.
Speaking at the cheque distribution ceremony at Governor House, Naeem termed land fraud one of the top offences in Karachi, saying the land owned by the state is a major source of corruption with the assistance of land grabbers.
“NAB Karachi, with its relentless efforts in 2015, has been able to cancel 20,000 acres of government land that was worth Rs2.5trillion and allotted illegally to different land grabbers,” he said, adding that approximately 550,000 acres of land in 56 different dehs of Thatta was inserted on fake entries that have been cancelled. The average value of this land is approximately Rs800,000 per acre, resulting in savings of approximately Rs440 billion, he claimed.
Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan, who was the chief guest at the ceremony, lauded NAB Karachi’s role in breaking the chain of corruption, money laundering and terrorism. Khan reiterated his cooperation in ridding all government departments from the scourge of corruption.
The cheques reflected amounts recovered in major cases of corruption, including cases against former Board of Revenue secretary, OASIS Trade International proprietors, a former KASB Bank employee, Water and Power Development Authority’s RBOD project officials, Mag Textile, Classic International, a National Bank of Pakistan manager, Sindh works and services, irrigation, food and health departments and Habib Bank Limited employees.
The amount was recovered under the provision of law by NAB Karachi and Rs105.789 million out of the total was handed over to the local government, works and services, irrigation, food and health departments through the Sindh chief secretary. The rest was returned among the remaining victims.
