The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has launched the first phase of establishing the physical and academic infrastructure of new sub-campuses of different universities, in a total of 31 districts of Pakistan, according to a press release on Wednesday.

Under the project, 16 campuses of public sector universities will be established in the aforementioned districts having a potential intake of 1,000 to 1,500 students, whereas, in other districts where the population is thin, the commission will provide Virtual University campuses.

The HEC will provide funding for infrastructure, faculty development and other allied facilities.

Moreover, respective provincial governments shall extend necessary support in terms of providing buildings to start academic activities and free of cost land for establishing universities or sub-campus.

A committee headed by Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal will oversee progress on the project.

The project aims to provide access to higher education in almost every district headquarter of Pakistan.

HEC Chairman Mukhtar Ahmad has directed to ensure benchmarking in higher education at all levels.

“HEC will make no compromise on the quality of any programme,” he said.
