LAHORE: Pakistan and Indian border security forces on Thursday said they will enhance communication between commanders on both sides to resolve border management issues peacefully.

This was decided during the three-day bi-annual meeting between heads of the Pakistan Rangers and Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Lahore headquarters of Punjab Rangers which ended on Thursday.

“In order to continue the endeavours revived in bi-annual meeting 2015, it was mutually decided to seek solution of irksome issues through enhanced contact and communication at all levels,” Rangers said in a statement at the end of the DG-level talks.

Pakistan was led by DG Pakistan Rangers Punjab Major General Umer Farooq Barki in the talks while Indian BSF was represented by DG KK Sharma. Representatives from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Pakistan Rangers (Sindh), Anti-Narcotics Force and Survey of Pakistan also attended the meeting.

Both sides further agreed that minor issues relating to border management will be decided by local commanders through frequent flag meetings.

They also discussed the swift return of people who had inadvertently strayed across the border and decided that such people should be safely returned.

The two sides appreciated each other’s efforts to clamp down on cross-border smuggling of drugs and contraband. They resolved to share information about smugglers in addition to taking appropriate measures to end the illegal activity.
