British Prime Minister Theresa May telephoned on Tuesday Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, assuring United Kingdom’s cooperation in the post-Brexit era.

“There will be no adverse effects on the bilateral relations after Great Britain exits the EU,” Radio Pakistan quoted May as saying.

“Pakistan and the UK will work together as bilateral partners. Great Britain is committed to work with Pakistan in security related matters and strengthening democracy,” she said.

May said the UK strongly supported the democratic system of Pakistan, adding the latter's development and democracy were interlinked.

She also expressed her desire to visit Pakistan in coming months in the capacity of the British prime minister.

Nawaz also congratulated Britain's second woman prime minister on her 'historic appointment'.

“Theresa May's appointment reflects the faith and confidence the people of UK have reposed in her ability to steer the country at this historic time,” the prime minister said.
