Sindh allows conjugal visits for prisoners

Published: May 7, 2010

Wifes can make conjugal visits to their husbands in jail, once every three months.

KARACHI: Sindh Government has ordered jails across the province to allow conjugal visits to prisoners once every three months.

Prisoners’ wives will be allowed to visit their husbands in jail for one night, provided they bring a valid nikah document and a national identity card.

The order came after a meeting of the Sindh High Court and Supreme Court Jails Reform Committee.

The home minister’s notification clarifies that prisoners who have been serving for more than five years in jail are eligible for this.

Sources have confirmed that prisoners will be provided with facilities to accommodate the new directives.

Beside the connubial permission, who will work on Jail police reforms? A normal person becomes rated criminal in such environment. There is high need to revamp jail culture, where people can’t access to see their friends and family member who pay visits on designated timings. Visitors have to pay money, food and other demands. How much it would be safe for women to get there in such situation in law zone. This move will be another way to open new way of corruption for Police.Recommend

this may increase problems such as harrasment of women by the police or even black-mailing them. this is a security risk for those women who will visit such a place.Recommend

The space in jails is not enough to keep the prisoners, how prisoners can accommodate his wife once in three months time.

The government has not elaborated that how prisoners will maintain privacy? Is a prisoner will get a single room when his wife will visit him in the jail?Recommend

Knowing the corruption and mentalities of the majority of the Police force, I won’t be surprised if they start mistreating the women visitors/wives of prisoners or even attempt to rape them. As disgusting as this sounds, this is the truth of the Police in our society.Recommend
