MULTAN: Scores of participants of a funeral procession protested against Motorway Police on Saturday over what they called unfair fines.

The protest broke out soon after a funeral procession left Basti Malook. As many as 60 people were participating in it. Nadeem, one of the participants, told newsmen that the villagers were taking part in the funeral of Muhammad Qasim’s wife. He said the man was the principal of a private school.

“We were taking the coffin to the cemetery when Motorway Police stopped us and fined us,” he said. “Some people asked why they were being fined but the question was ignored.”

“They showed no sensitivity towards the grieving family,” he said. “They were not even courteous.”

Talking to The Express Tribune, Motorway Police spokesman Muhammad Mushtaq said participants of the procession had been asked to walk in the service lane.

“They ignored our directions and were obstructing traffic,” he said.

“When we fined them, they started protesting so we called the DSP to intervene,” he said. He said the protesters had dispersed after a meeting with the DSP.
