HARIPUR: A SHO and two of his subordinates are facing criminal charges for subjecting a prison detainee to physical and mental torture during custody. The court has ordered that a case should be registered against them.

According to Advocate Jawad Habib, counsel for 20-year-old Faizan, Khalabat SHO Anas Khan and his two subordinates, Babar and Shehzad, picked up his 20-year-old client from Darband Adda on May 27, without any charges.

The 20-year-old was driven to Khalabat Township police station where he was kept overnight. The complaint filed by the victim with the court of additional district judge Amjad Hussain states the SHO and his subordinates thrashed the victim with bamboo sticks and punched and kicked him. He was paraded naked in the vicinity of the police station. According to the lawyer, his client collapsed twice during the custodial abuse and was unable to tolerate brutal torture.

The victim was examined on the court’s orders by a medical board at District Headquarters Teaching Hospital wherein it was confirmed that victim’s body carried torture marks.

After hearing the arguments, Hussain has ordered an FIR should be registered against the SHO and his two subordinates. The act of brutality was a clear violation of Article 14(2) of the Constitution, which prohibits subjecting a detainee for the sake of extraction of evidence.
