KARACHI: Instead of words, we should preach through our character and follow the path of Jesus and people like humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi, said pastor Saith Gill at Central Brooks Memorial Church on Sunday morning where special prayers were offered.

"In order to enter the Kingdom of God, one needs to struggle really hard," said Gill, adding that the canon law in Christianity is love. During the prayer, the pastor said we should strive to be devoted to fellow human beings as Edhi did so we can enter the God's Kingdom.

Gill stressed that love demands sacrifice and we must go to any level to achieve the closeness of God. "God sends people like Edhi in this world to set an example and its compulsory on us that we, as ordinary persons, should pay tribute to figures like him who served people without any discrimination," he said.

A worshiper, Pervaiz Akhtar, stated that Edhi was an exemplary figure who served humanity. He was of the view that people holding higher offices should learn from him to make the world a better place.

"He was one of the greatest human beings of these times," said another worshiper, Shaukat Stephen. According to him, Edhi provided shelter to thousands of people and offered all kinds of support to all those in need, including the poor, helpless, weak, vulnerable, orphans, widows and elders. "We pray to Jesus that he gives him a place in heaven," said Stephen.

Mrs Kamla Wilson, who was also praying, remarked that Edhi dedicated his entire life to social work and taking care of those in need. "May God bring such servants of humankind so that no one must remain unattended in this world," she said. She was of the view that we, as human beings, should take care of others instead of being selfish - just like Edhi did throughout his life.

According to Mrs Anil, the young generation should follow the footsteps of Edhi, which would certainly steer mankind in the direction of progress.

Talking to The Express Tribune, an office-bearer of the church, Reverend Emmanuel Zahid, recalled how he first met Edhi during Christmas prayers at Saint Andrews Church back in 2008. He stated that Edhi participated in the prayers and had given offerings. Zahid added that Edhi appreciated when he said that Jesus loves those who serve humanity more than priests or preachers.
