ISLAMABAD: Police have yet to arrest a car driver after he killed a pedestrian in a rash driving incident in I-10 on June 14.

Tahir was walking by the roadside when a car (MY-246) hit him in I-10 Markaz.

He suffered serious injuries and later died at a hospital.

Instead of registering a case upon receiving the information, the Sabzi Mandi police delayed the matter and only registered an FIR on June 24.

The police registered the case against the “unknown driver” and booked him for murder by mistake through rash and negligent driving.

ASI Sohaib Pasha, who is investigation officer for the case, told The Express Tribune on Sunday that the suspect had not been arrested yet.

Asked why the police took 10 days to register a case, he said both the parties tried to reach a compromise and the case was registered when no compromise was reached.

He said the suspect, who also bore expenses for treatment of the victim, was not named in the FIR since Tahir’s father Muhammad Aziz had not named him in the FIR.

“We will soon arrest the suspect and produce him before the court,” he said.

It is pertinent to note here that casualties due to road accidents have been on the rise in the capital in recent months.

At least 10 persons were killed and 13 injured in road accident during May alone in Islamabad.

The actual number of cases is much higher, since most accidents are not reported to police as the parties seek an out-of-court settlement.

Of the 21 road accidents registered by the police during May, 11 involve motorcyclists.
