PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police uploaded profiles of 21 people who have been involved in extortion cases in different parts of the province on its official website this week.

Out of the 21 criminals, seven are from Peshawar, five from Khyber Agency, two from Swabi, two from Swat, two from Abbottabad, one from Haripur, one from Muzaffarabad and one from Buner district. Speaking to The Express Tribune, a police official said, “We have evidence and so we strongly believe that criminals help militants identify victims for extortion.” He added, “In this way, they either play the role of facilitators or that of a local network, making it extremely necessary to stop the entire process.”

The official also said some convicted and released criminals were involved in kidnapping for ransom and armed robberies. He added putting their profiles online for the public will help identify them easily.

The past

Earlier, the K-P police decided to display data of criminals who are involved in heinous crimes on its website. The move was made to prevent recidivism as the police fear some criminals will resume illegal activities soon after they are released from jails.

Extortionists demand Rs60m

The step would provide the public with a database of criminals which could be accessed online. In addition, they could also help the police identify the criminals with the help of the database. If people have fallen victim to a crime, they could help the police identify the criminal through the database.

IGP Nasir Khan Durrani had said they had decided to put the pictures and all relevant information about criminals involved in heinous crimes on their official website to make it easier to identify them. He said the data of those criminals and terrorists, whose name had been published in the police red book, were not included.
