‘Sports vital to well-rounded education’

Sports gala at AIOU concludes

ISLAMABAD: The Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) Vice-Chancellor, Dr Shahid Siddiqui, on Sunday stressed the importance of sports and other healthy recreational activities for a well-rounded education.

The vice-chancellor, while speaking at the concluding ceremony of the AIOU’s annual sports gala, which began on the first of June, congratulated the event organisers and said that such activities promoted positivity and sportsman spirit among students.

Dr Siddiqui suggested all universities in the federal capital should pool their resources to promote sports, which he said was imperative to promote good health and positivity among the youth.

The matches held during the gala included cricket, table tennis and football.

At least 16 cricket teams, 16 table tennis teams and eight football teams participated in the event.

In the cricket championship, the Colony Lions were declared the winning team.

In the finals of the table tennis competition, Chaudhry Rizwan Roshan beat Asif Mehmood Khan and secured first position. In the football championship, University Gunners were awarded first position after beating the University Stallions.

The winning teams were awarded trophies and certificates at a ceremony held at the university’s residential colony ground.

The AIOU Registrar, Dr Muhammad Naeem Qureshi, Faculty of Social Sciences Dean Prof Syed Abdul Siraj, Project Director Sharifullah, as well as faculty members and a large number of employees and students attended the ceremony.
