Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur, who arrived in Lahore Wednesday, has said he wants the players to grow and not fear failure.

"We have to give players roots to grow and wings to fly," he said while addressing a press conference at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore on Thursday. "I don’t care if they [players] fail. They shouldn’t fear failure, rather should learn from them and progress as professional cricketers."

Talking about his plan for the national team, the former South Africa coach said he had already outlined a short- and long-term plan for the near future.

"I have had good discussion with chief selector Inzamamul Haq and others in his staff, and we believe that we need to find players who serve us in the long-term," the 48-year-old said. "We need to make consistent selection choices in order to allow our players to improve."

He added, "In short-term, we have problems in the team, i.e. discipline, which we shall deal with on a day-to-day basis."

Speaking about the upcoming tour of England, the 48-year-old said he would specifically focus on improving the results in limited-overs format.

"We need to improve in ODIs and T20s because our rankings in both formats for been poor," he said. "Our ranking in Tests is fair - mainly because we have been playing in friendly conditions.

"Pakistan's upcoming tours of England, Australia and New Zealand will allow us to experiment on away conditions and see how much improvement we need in all formats."

The former South African coach, who guided the Proteas to top Test and one-day rankings, was appointed head coach of the Men in Green on May 6. He replaced Waqar Younis, who resigned following the national team’s dismal performance in Asia Cup and World T20 tournaments.

Arthur missed the national squad's boot camp and skills camp, which were set up by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) ahead of England's tour.

Arthur previously coached Karachi Kings franchise in the inaugural edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) earlier this year.

shahid | 7 years ago | Reply @nasser: Its about the attitude not the performance. In my opinion these two characters should be kept away from the team till they prove their mettle in domestic cricket.
nasser | 7 years ago | Reply Positive thinking. Shahzad...Akmal etc failed due to fear of failure . Waqar was responsible for this mindset. Inzi has done injustice to the batsmen perhaps under Waqars influence.
