ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has formed a three-member committee to probe and ascertain the facts surrounding the murder of a school teacher in Murree.

Maria Sadaqat, 19, was set ablaze by a group of people in a village in Murree on June 1 for refusing a marriage proposal. Later, she died at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences during treatment as she had sustained 85 burn injuries.

Police had arrested three accused in the murder case, however, the suspects have told investigators that they were neither present at the crime scene nor in the village when the incident took place. On the request of the Murree police, the Rawalpindi Saddar IT lab has started collecting mobile phone data record of the suspects to establish whether they were present in the village when the murder happened.

SCBA President Syed Ali Zafar said that the committee comprising Asma Jahangir, Kamran Murtaza and Tehmina  Mohibullah will thoroughly enquire and probe the Sadaqat’s killing to ensure that the investigation of the crime was being conducted in a credible manner and in accordance with the law. The committee will ensure that the real culprits were brought to justice.

Zafar said that he had reason to believe that Maria, like others, too, would only become a statistic, while the criminals would be set free.

He said that hundreds of women were being killed in Pakistan with impunity, and the culprits were getting away with murder.
