People with diabetes should take extra care while fasting to manage their blood glucose levels and avoid any further complications during Ramazan. Frequent disturbances in blood glucose levels can lead to permanent health problems, said Shifa International Hospital (SIH) Consultant Endocrinologist Dr Usama Ishtiaq in a seminar ‘Roza aur Sehat’, organised by hospital. The seminar was held to create awareness among diabetics on how to fast without endangering themselves, said a press release.

Dr Ishtiaq said patients should monitor blood glucose regularly while fasting, especially in the initial days. He instructed patients to continue taking their medication in line with the advice of their doctors and must strictly follow recommended dosages and timings.

He stated that around 40 to 50 million Muslims with diabetes around the world fast during Ramazan.

He warned that frequent disturbances in diabetes can cause permanent harm, and also guided attendees on how to adjust insulin while fasting.
