ABBOTABAD: A woman was sentenced to life imprisonment for poisoning her three children to death in a village in Bakote Circle, Abbottabad.

During proceedings at a local court on Saturday, the prosecution said Sultan, a resident of Malkot village, filed an FIR with Bakote police station on July 4, 2013, accusing his wife Aasia Bibi of poisoning her three children – seven-year-old Hashim, four-year-old Sumaira and three-year-old Shumail.

The prosecution added Sultan had an argument with his wife before the incident. During the altercation, Aasia Bibi had threatened to poison their children.

However, in her initial statement, Aasia Bibi said her children died eating ajwain, also known as Ajowan caraway or carom. However, later she confessed to killing her children.

While recording her statement before the court, Aasia Bibi said she had poisoned her three children because her husband had mistreated her. She informed the court her husband Sultan, who was unemployed, would subject her to domestic violence whenever she asked him to work.

Aasia Bibi added she fought with her husband hours before she killed her children. As per her statement, there was no food in the house to feed the children. Aasia Bibi said she bought poison from a shop after her husband stormed out of the house. She mixed it with ajwain and offered it to her children.

After a three-year-long trial, additional sessions judge Naveedur Rehman awarded life imprisonment to Aasia Bibi.
