Focus on research vital for progress: Dr Nizam

Short-term training course organised for teachers at UVAS

LAHORE: “We have to focus on research in social and biological sciences to boost the higher education sector,” Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) Chairperson Dr Nizamuddin said on Monday.

He was addressing the inaugural session of a short training course for university and college teachers.

The Centre for Educational Policy and Administration (CEPA) of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore organised the training in collaboration with the PHEC.

UVAS Vice Chancellor Talat Naseer Pasha, Faculty of Bio Sciences Dean Habibur Rehman and a large number of faculty members from the UVAS were also present.

Nizam said that it was important to adopt modern teaching methodologies. “Teaching now involves technology, multimedia, videos and documentaries. So we have to train our faculties to keep pace with the changing trends,” he said. He said that the PHEC had launched various initiatives for the uplift of colleges and universities. “In-service short-term training of faculty members has been launched across the province to enhance teaching and communication skills of teachers. The PHEC is also planning to launch an Education Research Cell.

We are also working on a plan to convert degree colleges into community colleges,” he said.

Dr Nizam said that the veterinary science professionals were directly involved in national development as they were providing community services at grassroots level. He appreciated the UVAS role in the development of livestock sector.

Dr Pasha appreciated the initiatives taken by the PHEC for enhancing the capability of college and university faculty members. “UVAS teachers are equally focused on character-building. They are also involved in applied research and are currently executing 85 research projects costing Rs900 million. The UVAS is also producing vaccines for several animal diseases,” he said. Dr Pasha said that the university was working in collaboration with the industry and the stakeholders. “So far, we have organised six roundtable discussions on various issues related to livestock, dairy and poultry industries this year.

This training will enhance competency and skills of teachers,” he said.He said that the objective of the current workshop was to equip faculty members with advanced teaching methodologies, sound communication skills and groom their personalities.

“Resource persons will focus on communication skills, instructional strategies and techniques and designing and implementation of effective learning, curriculum and assessment techniques,” he said.
