Education for all : Most beneficiaries hail from south Punjab: PEF

LAHORE: The Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) has achieved many milestones by introducing a bevy of intervention in the education sector.

PEF MD Tariq Mahmood said on Wednesday while speaking to a nine-member Department for International Development (DFID) delegation at his office. The delegation was led by DFID Senior Education Adviser and Policy Lead Barbara Payne.

The PEF MD said the foundation had encouraged and assisted entrepreneurs establish schools across areas where the most disadvantaged dwelled to ensure that all children had access to education. This, Mahmood said, had prompted such communities to enrol their children at the schools. The PEF MD said their education was being financed by the foundation. Mahmood said this had helped children from low-income families resident in remote areas access free schooling facilities.

Mahmood briefed those present on the role and expansion of various public-private programmes of the foundation. He said the PEF had helped improve access to education, especially in south Punjab. This is where, Mahmood said, 67 per cent of PEF partner schools were situated. He said 69 per cent of the PEF’s 1.9 million beneficiaries hailed from the region. The PEF MD said the foundation had been striving to ensure the provision of quality education by organising teacher certification programmes and encouraging students to partake in extracurricular activities. Providing quality education is our priority, Mahmood said. He said the foundation wanted to cultivate future leaders with the assistance of its partner schools. Payne appreciated the efforts undertaken by the foundation to promote education. Education Adviser Javed Malik lauded the hard work and commitment of students from remote and developing areas.

He said PEF partner schools were a ray of hope for disadvantaged families. He also spoke about his experience of meeting some dedicated children from Muzaffargarh. He said their sheer commitment to education was noteworthy.

Earlier, various PEF programme directors briefed those present on the developments in their respective jurisdictions.
