PESHAWAR:

Social activists in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa cried out against the increasing incidents of honour killing in the province and the country overall.

They voiced their concern by protesting in front of Peshawar Press Club on Tuesday.

“We are gathered here to raise our voice against honour crimes which are increasing by the day,” social activist and lawyer Rakhshanda Naz said. She added statistics showed that these incidents were increasing by up to 10% each year.

“Forget about the last five years, even if we look at cases over the last week they are at least 11. Where is the government?” she asked. According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, 1,276 incidents of honour killings occurred in the country from February 2014 to February 2016. However, only 400 FIRs were filed. Official figures presented in the National Assembly showed that 933 people were killed in the name of honour in just two years. The social activists demanded that the perpetrators should be taken to task.

Social activists voiced their concerns over how such killings were becoming a norm in Pakistan.
