ISLAMABAD: Senior leaders of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) held a brainstorming session at the President House here on Friday under President Asif Ali Zardari.

Sources said that the discussion, which went on till late night, mainly revolved around the deteriorating economic and security situation, especially in Karachi in the wake of the recent spate of targeted killings, relations with allies mainly with the MQM in Sindh and the overall domestic political situation.

A participant of the PPP core committee meeting told The Express Tribune that the party would continue its policy of reconciliation, adding that it was decided to give more emphasis on resolving economic issues and taking on board all political forces on key issues.

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani briefed the meeting about contacts with the team of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, which has given a 45-day deadline to the government to implement a 10-point reform agenda. The premier also briefed the meeting about the progress of government economic team’s negotiations with other opposition parties and allies.

The meeting took serious note of the sacking of over 4,000 KESC employees. Participants agreed that sackings on such a large-scale were against the spirit of the KESC’s privatisation agreement.

The meeting appointed a three-member committee, comprising Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Minister for Labour and Manpower Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah and Adviser to the Prime Minister Senator Mian Raza Rabbani to help resolve the issue in consultation with the provincial chief minister and governor.
