Swara marriage attempt foiled by police in Upper Dir

A man was arrested for killing his daughter for marrying against her family’s wishes and for injuring his wife in Pind Gakhra village in Haripur on Thursday.


According to Khanpur police, Nusrat Bibi, wife of Azhar, said her 20-year-old daughter Aneeta Mushtaq married a man of her choice a few months ago. The family did not approve of her decision and severed all ties with her.

On Wednesday evening, Aneeta came to her house seeking forgiveness. However, Azhar was enraged at seeing her, pulled out his pistol and opened fire on her. When Nusrat Bibi tried to save her daughter, he shot her as well.

Both women were rushed to the hospital by locals where doctors pronounced Aneeta dead and Nusrat Bibi was referred to Ayub Teaching Hospital Abbottabad. Nusrat Bibi is in stable condition.

The police arrested Azhar and took him into custody for interrogation on Thursday.

Swara case

Dir police arrested members of two families involved in an attempt to get two minors married under the archaic swara custom to resolve disputes between two clans. The incident took place in Dobando area of Upper Dir on Thursday.

Man murders sisters in latest 'honour killings' in Sahiwal

According to police officials, they received information about the matter and raided the house. The parents along with the boy and girl who were to be married were arrested. Talking to journalists, DSP Sheer Rehman Khan said 10-year old Khalida Bibi, daughter of Umara Khan, was to be married to nine-year-old Fasihullah, son of Fakhar Ali to settle a dispute between both families.

They said the decision to give the minor girl to the rival family’s son was taken during a jirga Wednesday night.
