Afridi lost his place in the team a few years back: Javed Miandad

ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad on Wednesday said Twenty20 skipper Shahid Afridi does not deserve a place in the team.

“How can you have a player whose performance is not reliable. Afridi’s place in the team was over few years back,” Miandad said while speaking to a private news channel.

Miandad’s statement comes days after Pakistan lost the Asia Cup T20 match against its traditional rival India.

“How you can expect to win or make your cricket better when a player who stopped being a reliable performer some years ago is still playing for the national team as captain?” he questioned.

Miandad said that due to nepotism and favouritism, Pakistan’s domestic circuit was not producing quality cricketers. “Pakistan’s domestic system may look good on the surface but the reality is otherwise,” he upheld.

Holding Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) responsible for the poor state of affairs and questioning its role, the legendary batsman said, “Don’t they know what is going on? Don’t they notice what is happening to our cricket?”

“The selection committee and the players who don’tperform should be sacked,” he added.

“Many Pakistani players lacked cricket sense and did not have an aptitude for the game.”

Miandad was of the view that the Pakistan Super League (PSL) had not produced any talent for the national team. “I don’t see any player in the PSL who is so good that he can get a contract in the Big Bash or IPL,” he said.

The former coach of the national team also said that someone like Virat Kohli was successful in at least 70 to 80 per cent of his 100 innings while in contrast Pakistani players were consistent in only 20 to 30 per cent of their 100 innings.

“It is depressing to see Pakistan continuously losing to India,” Miandad said while recalling the days when Pakistan used to emerge victorious in most of the matches against arch-rivals.

Javed Bhai. You should have protested years ago. It’s too late now. Every body knew that Afridi is a street crickter. Recommend

He’s absolutely right. Afridi is just a tail ender who just plays a good 40 run innings after every 20 innings and on the strength of that one performance he’s guaranteed to play for another 1 year! Since many senior players retired in quick succession and Afridi emerged as a senior player. That’s all he is a ‘senior’ player not a ‘good’ player. Drop him before WC even if Pakistan miraculously manages to win Asia Cup.Recommend

Do you mean 15 years from few years back ? While selection committe has selected the players who are rare performers in domestic like Sharjeel khan and Umer Akmal. How PCB can expect them to perform consistently in international matches.Recommend

If there was any honor and self respect….everyone including Afridi and Waqar Younus should resign…….But that is not a tradition in Pakistan where no one resigns if they do not perform.Recommend

What so ever the way Pakistan team played today they showed complete immaturity not a single player is reliable. Team needs to change now and Afridi must go for good now not for the team only but his own respect, he’s lost it seriously he never understand the situation!

Pakistan should only include players especially batsmen who have temperament for Test matches and they can also hit big time. Players like Afridi who are there to make one show and then wants to make big bucks buy joining some T20 league and advertisements are not really what Pakistan needs.Recommend

Well it looks like Mr Miadad does not understand how business works out….Perform or not Afridi is one of the greatest entertainers, half of the television viewers watch only because of him. Please keep playing Lala, you’re generating high TRP rates, best for business! Recommend

It is a shame that Pakistan lost to Bangladesh. Afridi performs once in 10-15 innings and I think its high time he hung his boots. PCB Selection committee should grow some testicles and drop this liability. The same applies to Hafeez. Not allowed to bowl cant bat, scores once in 10 innings. Throw these guys out. Recommend
