Tajik president meets army chief; appreciates Islamabad’s role in Afghan peace process

ISLAMABAD: Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon said on Tuesday that Pakistan’s ongoing war on terror was a ‘role model’ for the rest of the world.

The Tajik premier made these remarks during a meeting with army chief General Raheel Sharif, who paid a day-long visit to Tajikistan, according to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

According to the military’s media wing, the two leaders discussed the regional situation with particular reference to common challenges of fighting terrorism and reconciliation in Afghanistan, which shares a border with both countries.



The Tajik president appreciated Pakistan’s role of facilitating the reconciliation process in Afghanistan and also lauded Pakistan Army’s phenomenal achievements during Operation Zarb-e-Azb.

He noted with admiration the operation being conducted by Pakistani forces against terrorists was a role model for rest of the world. “General Raheel’s visit will further cement bilateral relationship with Pakistan and provide an impetus to defence cooperation between both countries,” Rahmon said.

The Chief of Army Staff said Pakistan attached great importance to its relations with Tajikistan and offered Pakistan’s full support in capacity building of Tajikistan’s forces to counter terrorism. The army chief also held a meeting with the Tajik defence minister and the chief of general staff.

On arrival at the army headquarters, the COAS was accorded a warm welcome and presented with a guard of honour. Gen Raheel later visited the Military Institute and the Military Training Centre of Tajikistan.
