ISLAMABAD: Army chief General Raheel Sharif has said Balochistan has become a hotbed of proxy wars for regional and global powers pursuing a grand strategy.

Speaking at a seminar on peace and prosperity in Quetta on Tuesday, General Raheel said foreign adversaries were more than eager to exploit any opportunity to destabilise Pakistan by “harbouring, training and funding dissidents and militants.”

“This is a battle that we all are fighting, and we shall continue to fight till peace prevails across the width and breadth of the province,” he said.

General Raheel said the law enforcement agencies and the people of Balochistan had defended the integrity of Pakistan with unflinching resolve.

“Terrorists were externally supported and internally facilitated,” he said.

The COAS said the LEAs had conducted over 2,400 intelligence-based operations in Balochistan since August 2014 during which 204 lives were sacrificed.

Giving his perspective on the current security situation, General Raheel said overtime, diverse and divergent interests have led the province to most complex problems.

Lack of developed infrastructure, extreme poverty, poor educational and health facilities, and rampant unemployment lend credibility to the complaints of the aggrieved section of society, he added.

The army said issues were further complicated by the foreign interference across a porous border spanning hundreds of kilometers, a challenge for the civil armed forces of the province.

For this purpose, efforts are underway for the capacity building of security forces,” he said.

“I understand that use of force brings nothing but destruction, distress and suffering, often to those who had no part in it. Involvement of the people and state institutions, therefore, is the correct way forward for the prosperity of Balochistan.”

Youths are Balochistan’s future, army chief said, adding Pakistan Army was working to impart education to 25,000 youngsters of the province.

    Typical separatist mindset. It’s people like you who are a curse for this nation. What good is a land if it stays under developed and of no use? People like Bugti have kept Baloshistan in the darkness till this day!Recommend

    Hassan, while i acknowledge the discriminatory practices that have occurred against ALL minorities in Pakistan, while i absolutely agree that our governments must atone for the past and redirect for the future, while i agree that baluchistan, interior sindh, gilgit baltistan, fata and karachi to name a few must recieve their due , while i agree that the people have suffered by both federal and LOCAL sardars, khans, vaderas, goondas etc., Let me also tell you that independence is not going to happen… i say that as a minority myself. first we must liberate ourselves from our mentality, than our sardars, than our corrupt leaders, only then will we truly get “independence”. Till we ensure that no one is above the law, all the corrupt leaders who plunder Pakistan will continue to weaken it. Extreme poverty and lack of a good education makes it easier for the enemies to find collaborators within Pakistan. Bringing the corrupt leaders to justice will bring prosperity to all corners of Pakistan.Recommend

    Baluchistan its resources & its coast & ports belong to Baluch nation. So let them have it. it was & is army who made life miserable for Baluch & now the end result is that they don’t want to live in Pakistan & want to have freedom. The perefect solution is to let them have Baluchistan as free Idepdent country but with open borders for all. If we dont do that some one else would.Recommend

    For peace in Balochistan, we need to look at its history. Baloch always hated Pakistan and always wanted Independence when it was forced to join us like Kashmir problem this is the vestige from the partition days. Better solution would be to give them Autonomy with only Defence controlled by Pakistan state.Recommend

    Balochistan has been exploited by the Pakistani establishment for too long. We will not allow our resources to be plundered & our voices can’t be silenced with force. Balochistan deserves to be free & it will be inshahallah.Recommend

    @Hassan, i know you will not agree, but an independent Baluchistan will be no different than a present Afghanistan or Syria. Those forces who are fighting for the independence of Baluchistan will immediately start fighting with each other after the independence to gain control of the ‘new Baluchistan’. Your best option is to stay with Pakistan. Your and feudal lords are your worst enemies. Don’t blame Pakistan for that. They have brainwashed you for their own use.Recommend

    @Salim Khan:
    Baluchistan is not Pakistan. It was a separate Independent country forcibly occupied by Pakistan. Since then thousands of Baluchis were tortured and killed by Pak army. Just like what they did in east pakistan, now they are doing the same thing in Baluchistan. The day is not far when Baluchistan will be an independent secular and democratic nation.Recommend
