ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday directed the civic agency to initiate work on the formation of municipal police to help it enforce city bylaws.

The municipal police would work under the Islamabad local government and would handle issues such as encroachments.

While chairing a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat to review performance on ongoing Capital Development Authority (CDA) development projects, the premier said the civic agency should find innovative ways to remove encroachments from state land by employing technologies and satellite imagery available from the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission Suparco.

Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD) Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, CDA Chairman Maroof Afzal, and senior CADD officials attended the meeting, according to a handout issued by the PM Office on Friday.

The CADD minister gave a briefing on ongoing development projects.

The idea to set up a municipal police force came up when the meeting discussed issues related to informal settlements in Islamabad, and encroachments on state land and in commercial areas.

Sharif also issued directives that development work should be expedited and all projects should be completed on time.

He also emphasised that development projects should not affect national park areas or violate the capital’s master plan.

The meeting also discussed organisational issues at the CDA. The prime minister extended the ban on recruitment in the CDA and said that meritorious officers should be entrusted with increased responsibilities.
